Trim Levels
If you're looking at the 2019 Explorer, keep in mind that there are five trims available: base, XLT, Limited, Sport, and Platinum. The XLT trim includes a push-button start and proximity keyless entry. The Sport trim comes with a sport suspension, tow package, and off-road upgrades that include hill descent control. The top-of-the-line Platinum trim features almost every available upgrade including a twin-panel moonroof.
Engine
To power the 2019 Explorer, it comes with three robust engine options. The standard engine is a 290-horsepower V-6 one, and the first upgrade engine is a 280-horsepower turbocharged EcoBoost four-cylinder. Both engines work well for daily driving, whether you're dealing with stop-and-go city traffic or cruising down the highway. The top-of-the-line engine is a twin-turbocharged EcoBoost V-6 that produces 365 horsepower.
Performance
All engines with the 2019 Explorer are paired with a six-speed automatic transmission. In addition, front-wheel drive comes standard while all-wheel drive is optional.
Interior
Although the 2019 Explorer has room for seven people, you can easily opt for second-row captain's chairs so passengers have more support than with the standard bench seat. You can also have access to the third row better with the captain's chairs. The two third-row seats have ample room for adult travelers. The base trim comes with cloth upholstery and SYNC infotainment system with a 4.2-inch touch-screen display. The XLT trim includes a leather-wrapped steering wheel, while the Limited trim features leather upholstery and a SYNC 3 infotainment system. The top-of-the-line Platinum trim features almost every available upgrade including premium leather and premium sound system.
Pertaining to space, the SUV has 21 cubic feet of space behind the third-row seats. This is one of the largest spaces in its class. Once you fold down that row, you get 43.9 cubic feet of space. Folding down the second and third row gives you a maximum of 81.7 cubic feet of space. A hands-free power liftgate helps you get into those spaces easier.
Safety Features
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) awarded the 2019 Explorer with a perfect five-star overall crash-test rating. It also earned five stars in the side and frontal crash tests and four stars for the rollover test.
The vehicle's second-row outboard seats along with the third-row passenger-side seat have a complete set of LATCH connectors. If you have the second-row bench seat, you get a tether anchor for the middle seat. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) gave the LATCH system the second-highest rating.
Standard safety features on the 2019 Explorer include a rearview camera and the MyKey feature, which lets you set predetermined speed and audio restrictions. There are numerous optional safety features, including front-view parking camera, rain-sensing windshield wipers, blind spot monitoring, forward collision warning, and automatic parking assist.
