Maumee, Ohio, sits just a few miles outside of Toledo and is the oldest permanent settlement in northwest Ohio. It runs along the Maumee River, offering lovely scenic views and a rich history. This small city has several attractions to visit. No matter what you like to do, from museums to historic sites to shopping, you can find it. Here are some places you can go around Maumee for fun.

American Civil War Museum

The American Civil War Museum has over 10,000 square feet of exhibits to explore. The eight main exhibits include “The War Begins,” “Life of a Soldier,” and “The Road to War,” which showcases the events that led to the war between the states. You can also see “Andrew’s Raiders” to learn about the men that took part in the raid, and take in the “Leaders” exhibit. This museum also has a research library and a video room showing a 20-minute documentary about Ohio’s role in the Civil War.

Imagination Station

Everyone can have some fun at Imagination Station. This hands-on science center provides a place for visitors of all ages to explore the science behind health, engineering, energy, water, and agriculture. Check out the live experiments that take place at the Extreme Science Theater, where you can learn about motion and sound. Make sure to set several hours aside when you visit Imagination Station, and stop by the Atomic Cafe for lunch.

In December, visit the center for all kinds of winter and holiday fun. Learn about extreme winter weather and winter sports science and see the model trains. At the end of December, bring the kids for “Splash, Splatter, and Spray,” where they can make a huge mess while they experiment.

Toledo Zoo & Aquarium

The Toledo Zoo & Aquarium has a 178,000-gallon tank, over 3,000 aquatic animals, and hundreds of different species. Explore the touch tank, which is equipped with sharks, stingrays, and horseshoe crabs, or check out the ocean lab, where you can get up close to sea stars and sea urchins. For even more fun, the interactive experiences include color-changing moon jellies and a life-size kelp forest. The zoo offers fun events for kids and adults all year round, from behind-the-scenes tours and the new Promedica Museum of Natural History.

Maumee Bay State Park

Visit Maumee Bay State Park, where you’ll find over 1,336 acres of space for all kinds of recreation, from hiking to golfing and archery. The park sits on the shore of Lake Erie, with a marina for boating in the warmer months, or you can stay on land go golfing. Lake Erie offers some of the best fishing in the Midwest, with walleye, channel catfish, and freshwater drum available.

The park’s nature center has interactive displays, an auditorium, and a viewing window where visitors of all ages can learn about the park’s history and the wildlife in the area.
